Joel is a MAPEH (music, art, physical education, and health) teacher at Eastern Visayas State University-Secondary Laboratory School, Tacloban City. His love for local folklore was stirred when he ventured a research study as a part of his master’s thesis at University of the Visayas Cebu City entitled “Traditional Games in Leyte and the Values Learned by the Players: Basis for a Guide on How to Play the Games”.

He is also a member of the Guadalupe Youth Choir (GYC) at Guadalupe Parish Church, Abucay, Tacloban City. Being a member of the group exposes him to songs of different genres-religious, pop, OPMs, and folksongs.

Moreover, he is also a member of the Youth for a United World, a youth branch of the Focolare Movement. They strive in many ways to build universal brotherhood, to heal the divisions that exist within families, between generations, between different social groups, etc.
